Any organization saying they are certifying medical affairs professionals or medical writers are misleading professionals. Certificates, from institutions such as the Medical Writing Institute, or from accredited universities, are never accredited, and they cannot certify. What they can do, we can do, is train professionals and is award certificates of competence in a specified range of topics. The Medical Writing Institute provides training in all aspects, and in greater depth, than are advertised by companies claiming to certify medical affairs professionals.
If you have already earned a life sciences PhD, MD, PharmD, MS, MJ or MA, when you are accepted as a member of the Medical Writing Institute, you may add after your name MMWI, which signifies that you have completed earned certificates in medical writing and in medical affairs. Fellows of the Medical Writing Institute, FMWI are nominated and elected by members.
