CME is defined by Duke University as "Continuing Medical Education (CME) is defined as
“educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase
the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships
that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or
the profession” (source: ACCME and AMA)."
Continuing education (CE) is offered by many institutions and companies, a list of CE providers is given at http://www.usphs.gov/corpslinks/pharmacy/cesites.html.
CE and CME is all about giving health professionals education so they can keep their licenses current. It can take many forms, read about it on the premier CME website, http://www.accme.org/
Free CE and CME is given at http://cme.medscape.com/.
CE/CME often is given as lectures over an hour or so with detailed PowerPoint slides. The professional gets CME credits from taking a simple quiz, or from just showing up. Medical writers prepare the CME materials.
CME, like everything else that functions effectively, is based on trust and accountability. CME has to deliver what it promises and a lot of academic research focuses on looking at CME outcomes. Click to download a paper describing outcomes. Outcomes are important for any academic institution, the reason for the grades in each project and quiz are to maintain standards and show to our accrediting body that MiMW can be trusted because it is accountable.
